It gives the voice that much sought-after hollow, ringing quality wizards love.

Thieves, well that's a bit stranger imo, but it doesn't really hurt. They just fail at listening unless the player remembers to mention that they take it off first.
ScrivenerBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04861652415900436411noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4607464045429311026.post-18210890941456313212013-08-27T21:25:54.082-07:002013-08-27T21:25:54.082-07:00Sounds like a functional rule - makes that 25 GP h...Sounds like a functional rule - makes that 25 GP helmet worthwhile as well - especially for 1st level fighters under OD&D rules. Begs a question though - can thieves and wizards wear helms?Gus Lhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14872819206286105195noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4607464045429311026.post-71230488031975873332013-08-27T20:03:57.778-07:002013-08-27T20:03:57.778-07:00Howabout this. Go with the notion of "suit of armor includes a helm appropriate to the AC provided" as with my DCC rule, and allow anyone to wear a great helm that replaces this normal helm (or no helm if no armor).

A great helm imposes a -1 initiative penalty, but if anyone hits you and rolls max damage, that die must be re-rolled. This operates on the notion that anyone who hit you for max damage probably hit you on the head.ScrivenerBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04861652415900436411noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4607464045429311026.post-40718050523815921172013-08-27T16:04:47.175-07:002013-08-27T16:04:47.175-07:00Strangely the thing that got me thinking about hel...Strangely the thing that got me thinking about helmets last night was going back to finish up the HMS APOLLYON equipment tables (almost done with the human ones - not sure about demi-human, but it's too much color not to make them separate)and noticing that (since they are shamelessly stolen from Brendan's OD&D tables) helmet appears only as a pretty high value item on them.

I get that the most common way of dealing is to use the helmet as a part of armor, and certainly when one has a more complex combat system than OD&D hit locations and helmets make sense. What I am interested in is providing a piece of dungeoneering equipment worth 25GP (out of a max of 180GP)but not overpowered.Gus Lhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14872819206286105195noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4607464045429311026.post-86360018047534079102013-08-27T14:33:19.304-07:002013-08-27T14:33:19.304-07:00DCC, or any game with critical hit tables, offers ...DCC, or any game with critical hit tables, offers a good way of integrating helmets. My house rule is that while any suit of armor includes some sort of helmet minimally appropriate to the AC involved, anyone can opt for a particularly large, protective helm that provides a save vs. crits to the head, but imposes a -1 initiative penalty. Reasonably straightforward, I think.ScrivenerBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04861652415900436411noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4607464045429311026.post-66205188195043289742013-08-27T12:52:30.336-07:002013-08-27T12:52:30.336-07:00Interesting ideas.
